 In this page I will share the information I have amassed through forty years on researching my family name, it will take time for me to get it all down, but I will be adding to it regularly here. Joe Graham. Many of the The following records are from Glenwherry Presbyterian Church.(Pictured Above)..

John Graham. 1811-1887, married Margaret. 1808-1897. lived at Glenhead, Glenwherry, had three children , one died in infancy, Gawn died aged 29, Francis died in USA aged 21.

James Graham 1804-1893. married Sarah Bonner 1810-1889. Lived at Grahamstown, Glenwherry, They had seven children, John, David, Francis, William, Samuel Jane and Alex.

Josias Graham. 1802-1879 married Agnes Bonner 1805-1864 lived at The Brae, Glenwherry. Their son Francis went to Australia during the gold rushes of the 1850's and there he married a Glenwhirry girl, Jane Witherhead.

Josias Graham, 1847-1931 Married Margaret McCurdy, 1857-1951, Lived at The Brae, son of the above Josias and Agnes. Had three children, Francis, Mary and Martha.

William.M.Graham.1832-1903 married Sarah Caldwell,1834-1906 had the shop at Glenwherry and William was a County Councillor.

William J. Graham. 1837-1918 married Elizabeth 1834-1913.

Glenwhirry Parish Alias Glenwherry Parish.

Gleann a’ Choire, glen of the cauldron, Glen of the River Curry, Coire a cauldron or whirlpool. The pool that gives its name to the river, and through the river to the parish, is under a cataract. A rocky hill nearby is called Sceir a’ Choire, rock of the cauldron, anglicised Skerrywhirry.

This parish is called Glancurry in the Inquisitions,

a much better rendering of the Gaelic name than Glenwhirry

This parish is situated near the centre of the County of Antrim and in the south of the barony of Lower Antrim. It is 16 miles North of Belfast, 6 miles West of Lame, and 5 miles S.E. of Ballymena. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Racavan, Tickmacrevan and Kllwaughter; on the East by Kilwaughter parish, on the South by the Townlands of Ballycor, Connor and Rashee; and on the West by Ballyclug.

The parish contains 11,368 acres. About one eighth of it is arable of a bad description; the remainder is mountain and bog. A range of mountains bounds the North of the parish and is called the Glenwhirry Mountains, the highest being from 800 to 1,342 ft. The road from Kells and Ballymena to Larne runs East and West the whole length of the parish, and a cross road. runs off it to Broughglen (Broughshane) and Ballyclare. These roads are kept in bad repair.

The Glenwhirry River bounds the S. side of the parish, taking its rise in Kilwaughter. This parish pays no tithes, and is generally called the Territory of Glenwhirry. About the centre of the parish is the Presbyterian Meeting—House. The population comprises 1,358 persons, according to the Census of 1831.

Townlands.

Glenwhirry alais Glenwherry Townland.

This Townland is situated in the South side and the centre of the parish. It is bounded on the North by the town lands of Mistyburn and Jockeysquarter on the West by the town lands of Mistyburn and Kinnegalliagh; and on the South by the parish of Rashee.

• About four—fifths of this td. are arable of a bad qual ity; the remainder is bog and mountain pasture. The main road from Ballymena to Lame runs B. and W. through it. On the N. side of this road and near the centre of the td. is situated the new Presbyterian Meeting—House. The td. contains 1,243 at. acres and a population of 227 persons, census 1831.

Ballynulto - Baile an Ultaigh, town of the Ulsterman.

This Townland is situated in the N.W. extremity of the ph. and is bounded, on the N. and East by the parish of Racavan; on the West by the parish of Ballyclug; and on the South by the Townland of Greenhill.

About one—sixth of the townlandis arable of a bad quality; the remainder is uncultivated and mountain bog. The main road from Broughshane to Larne by Glenwhirry pass through it. . I contains 588 statute acres, and a population of 44 persons, according to the Census of 1831.

Green Hill

This Townland is situated in the W. extremity of the parish, and is bounded on the N. by the townland of Ballynulto; on the East by Rathcavan (Racavan) parish and the townland of Crosshill; on the South by the townlands of Clatteryknowes and Kernyhill; & on the West by the parish of Ballyclug.

About one fifth of this townland is arable of a bad quality; the remainder is bog and mountain. It contains 852 acres measure. Roads from Ballymena and Broughshane to Larne form a junction in it. It contains a population of 113 persons, census 1831

Clatteryknowes

This Townland is situated in the West extremity of the parish. It is bounded on the North by the townland of Greenhill; on the East by Kerny hill townland on the West by the parish of Ballyclug; and on the South by the parish of Connor.

One—third of the townland is arable of a bad quality; the remainder is mountain pasture and bog. The road from Kells to Larne runs East and West through it. In the west of the townland is a Corn Mill, and in the South is an old square fort. It contains 440 at. acres and a population of 128 persons, census 1831.

Clatteryknowes = Clattering hills.

Kernyhill   Cam Aodha, Hugh’s stone sepulchral pile (?).

This townland is situated in the West end of the parish and is bounded on the North by the town lands of Greenhill and Crosshill; on the East by Kinnegalliagh townland; on the South by the parish of Connor; and on the West by the town land of Clatteryknowes. It contains 300 st. acres.

About one-third of the townland is arable of a. bad description; the remainder is uncultivated and bog. Near the centre of the td.,. at a cross—roads, is situated a public house, commonly called The Battery, and about 20 chains North East of which is a smith’s shop. From the crossroads above mentioned roads branch to Larne, Ballyclare, Kells and Ballymena. There is a population of 112 persons, census 1831.

Crosshill

This Townland is situated in the North West end of the parish, and is bounded on the North by the parish of Racavan; on the East by the townlands of Douglas and Mistyburn; on the West by Greenhill townland and on the South by the townlands of Kennyhill and Kinnegalliagh.

About one Quarter of this townland is arable of a bad quality; the remainder is mountain and bog. It contains 541 st. acres, and a population of 66 persons, census 1831.

Kinnegalliagh - Ceann na gCailleach, head or hill of the nuns.

This townland is situated in the South West end of the parish, and is bounded on the North by the town land of Crosshill; on the East by Glenwhirry townland on the West by the town land of Kerny Hill; and on the South by the parishes of Rashee and Connor for about 7 chains.

About One Third of this townland is cultivated and soil tolerably good; the remainder of the townland is bog and mountain pasture. The road from Kells and Ballymena to Larne run East and West through it, and south of this road stands the house of Mr. Brangin, having some small plantations surrounding it. This Townland contains 270 st. acres, and has a population of 56 persons, census 1831.

Mistyburn - i.e., misty stream.

This td. is situated about the centre of the ph., and is bounded on the N. by the td. of Douglass; on the S. and E. by Glenwhirry town land and on the West by the townland of Crosshill.

About one—fifth of the townland is arable of a bad quality; the remainder is mountain and bog. There is a corn mill and a kiln here. It contains 423 st. acres and a population of 50 persons, census 1831.
